HPV VACCINE CUTS CERVICAL CANCER DEATHS IN UNDER-30S TO NEAR ZERO

THU 18 JUN 2026

Women who received an HPV vaccine in early adolescence have virtually zero risk of dying from cervical cancer before the age of 30, according to a groundbreaking study. The research demonstrates the effectiveness of the immunisation programme in preventing cervical cancer mortality in vaccinated cohorts. Experts have flagged concern that falling vaccination rates among teenagers could reverse these gains and lead to a rise in avoidable deaths.

Cervical cancer ranks as the fourth most common cancer affecting women globally. The study examined outcomes in women who received the HPV jab during early adolescence, comparing mortality and incidence rates against unvaccinated populations. The findings provide substantial evidence that the vaccine delivers significant protection against the disease when administered at a young age, before exposure to the human papillomavirus occurs.

Public health officials have expressed concern about declining take-up of the HPV vaccine amongst teenagers in recent years. The drop in vaccination coverage could undermine the population-level benefits achieved through earlier immunisation campaigns. Continued monitoring of vaccination rates and cervical cancer incidence remains essential to track whether declining uptake translates into increased cases and deaths in future age cohorts.
