NOAH LYLES SETS 150M WORLD RECORD AT GOLDEN SPIKE
Noah Lyles set a new world record in the 150 metres at the Golden Spike meeting in Ostrava, Czech Republic on 16 June. Lyles crossed the line in 14.67 seconds, surpassing the previous world record of 14.92 seconds established earlier in 2026 by Kishane Thompson in Miramar, Florida. Sinesipho Dambile of South Africa finished second in 14.78 seconds, setting a new African record for the distance. Australian teenager Gout Gout completed the podium in third place with a time of 14.96 seconds.
This marked Lyles' first competitive race over 150 metres on a curved track. Before the event, Lyles had stated publicly that he believed the existing world record was too slow and intended to improve it significantly. The race represented the first direct competition between Lyles and Gout Gout, though the two athletes had previously trained together in January at the National Training Centre in Clermont as part of an Adidas mentoring programme overseen by coach Lance Brauman. Lyles had opened his 2026 season with a time of 9.88 seconds in the 100 metres at the Golden Gala in Rome less than two weeks earlier.
The 150-metre result comes during what Lyles described as an off-year with no Olympic Games or World Championships scheduled. He had indicated his intention to approach the season as an opportunity to enjoy competition rather than pursue major titles. The performance demonstrates continued competitive form from one of the world's leading sprinters.
