FINANCIER LEX GREENSILL BANNED FROM UK COMPANY DIRECTORSHIPS

THU 04 JUN 2026 OTHER

Financier Lex Greensill has been banned from acting as a director of companies in the United Kingdom for nine years. The Insolvency Service issued the disqualification, which prevents Greensill from forming, managing, or directing any UK-registered company. The ban follows the collapse of Greensill Capital, the supply-chain finance firm he founded. The disqualification is now in effect.

Greensill Capital collapsed in March 2021, triggering one of the most significant corporate failures in recent UK financial history. The firm had provided supply-chain finance to major businesses, including GFG Alliance, the steel and commodities group led by Sanjeev Gupta. Its collapse prompted regulatory scrutiny of supply-chain finance practices and raised questions about the firm's risk management and lending decisions. Greensill had also held an advisory role with the UK government, a relationship that later attracted a separate parliamentary investigation.

A nine-year directorship ban is among the longer disqualification periods available under UK company law, which allows bans of between two and fifteen years. The disqualification applies to companies registered in the United Kingdom. Greensill has operated across multiple jurisdictions, including Australia and the United States, and the UK ban does not automatically extend to those countries. The Insolvency Service confirmed the ruling is binding and enforceable under the Company Directors Disqualification Act.
