SPACEX ACQUIRES CURSOR AI CODING TOOL FOR $60 BILLION

WED 17 JUN 2026 AI

SpaceX will acquire Cursor, an artificial intelligence coding tool, for $60 billion in an all-stock transaction. The companies announced the deal today, with closure expected in the third quarter. The acquisition follows SpaceX's recent initial public offering and a prior merger between SpaceX and xAI. Cursor operates as a modified version of Visual Studio Code with integrated large language model features.

Cursor was among the first tools to embed AI capabilities into an integrated development environment. The company has experienced significant revenue growth over the past year, though its market share has declined as rival products from Anthropic and Google gained prominence. Earlier this year, xAI agreed to provide Cursor with access to its computing infrastructure, and the two companies began jointly training models including Grok Build, xAI's coding and knowledge work application. The acquisition addresses a strategic gap for SpaceX, which previously lacked a competitive coding model despite positioning AI services as central to its enterprise offerings.

SpaceX possesses substantial computing capacity but had not developed competitive products to match offerings from Anthropic, Google and OpenAI. Cursor possessed talented staff and a functional product but could not compete with larger companies on computing resources. The combination addresses these complementary weaknesses, enabling SpaceX to strengthen its AI capabilities for enterprise customers. SpaceX's IPO prospectus emphasised the importance of artificial intelligence services to the company's future value proposition.
