JOHN LEWIS COMMITS £20M TO GLASGOW STORE REVAMP

WED 17 JUN 2026

John Lewis is investing £20m in a comprehensive upgrade of its Glasgow store located within Buchanan Galleries shopping centre. The project represents the largest single allocation within the retailer's £50m spend on store refreshes across the current financial year. Stores in Reading, Cambridge, Leicester and Liverpool will also receive upgrades as part of the wider modernisation programme.

The Glasgow refurbishment will expand the beauty hall to include a fragrance section and gift emporium, whilst introducing a new John Lewis Platter cafe-restaurant. A technology and sports floor will open by late September, with the lower ground floor completing first. The 28,000 square metre store will remain operational throughout construction, with work expected to conclude in early 2025. Susan Aitken, leader of Glasgow city council, described the investment as a vote of confidence in the city's retail sector.

The investment follows LandSec's decision last year to abandon demolition plans for Buchanan Galleries and instead pursue a major renovation of the 1990s shopping centre. LandSec is creating new leisure, dining and larger retail spaces as part of the broader overhaul. The Glasgow city centre has experienced prolonged challenges from online retail expansion and the decline of several historic buildings, making the John Lewis commitment part of a wider regeneration effort for the district.
