RUTH JONES AND STEVE SPEIRS BEGIN FILMING BBC COMEDY
Filming has commenced on Better Later, a six-part BBC comedy co-written by and starring Ruth Jones and Steve Speirs. The series is being shot in locations including Bannau Brycheiniog, also known as the Brecon Beacons, and is set in the fictional Welsh village of Brynfach. The comedy centres on two strangers who develop an unlikely friendship after meeting at a knee trauma clinic. Jones described the project as "35 years in the making", referencing the length of time since she first met Speirs.
Better Later follows retired teacher Clive and environmental health officer Shelley Anne as they navigate life changes. Clive is adjusting to widowhood whilst Shelley Anne is going through divorce proceedings. Jones and Speirs previously collaborated on Stella, a series about life in a fictional valleys town that ran from 2012 to 2017. Speirs remarked during production that Jones makes him laugh frequently, joking that "this could be a long shoot" as a result of their on-set chemistry.
Jones is known for her role as Nessa in Gavin & Stacey, whilst Speirs appeared in The Tuckers, which aired between 2018 and 2022 and focused on a south Wales family. Last year, the pair appeared together on television presenting their respective home towns to one another. The BBC has not yet announced an air date for Better Later.
