BRENT CRUDE FALLS BELOW $80 FOLLOWING REPORTED US-IRAN STRAIT DEAL

TUE 16 JUN 2026 MARKETS

Brent crude oil fell below $80 a barrel for the first time in more than three months following a reported US-Iran agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. According to market analysts, the decline reflects expectations that the deal will revive oil supplies through one of the world's most critical shipping routes. Leading Wall Street banks have reduced their oil price forecasts in response to the agreement. Petrol prices have also fallen alongside the crude decline.

The Strait of Hormuz represents a vital chokepoint for global oil transportation, with significant volumes of crude normally passing through the waterway. According to market reports, regional oil benchmarks have declined following the announcement of the US-Iran deal. The agreement is reported to signal a potential easing of tensions that had previously affected supply flows through the region. Market participants attributed the price movements to improved supply prospects across global energy markets.

Shipping data indicate that only a fraction of normal tanker volumes are currently moving through the Strait of Hormuz following the deal announcement. The difference between the reported agreement and actual vessel movements suggests that full restoration of normal supply flows has not yet occurred. Market participants continue to monitor shipping activity through the strait as a key indicator of whether the accord will deliver the supply increases currently reflected in crude market pricing.
