GOOGLE RELEASES ANDROID 17 WITH NEW AI FEATURES
Google released the final version of Android 17 operating system on Tuesday, alongside Wear OS 7 for smartwatches. The release arrived first on Pixel devices and included a Pixel Drop bringing new features. Support for the latest AI models formed a central part of the update, including the music generation model Lyria 3, the multimodal Gemini Omni, and speech-to-translation tools. The Pixel 10a received AudioLM speech-to-translation capability as part of the rollout.
Android 17 reflects Google's strategy of using its Android and Pixel devices to showcase its latest artificial intelligence technology. The operating system emphasises Gemini's role in creation, communication and other device experiences across the platform. The rollout also introduced bubble multi-tasking functionality and a foldable gaming mode. These features integrate AI capabilities into core device interactions rather than treating them as standalone additions.
The release positions Google's approach in contrast to rival Apple's AI strategy. Apple focused on catching up in artificial intelligence with a public launch of AI upgrades to Siri and iOS 27 in September. Google's Android 17 prioritises showcasing its newest AI models and their integration throughout the operating system. The staggered rollout began with Pixel devices ahead of broader availability.
